Blog Addendum - Ty Cobb Photos

These Photos Show Ty Cobb's Famous Sliding Images - and Why I Don't Think They Should Be Used For His Upcoming Cooperstown 5 Sports Pick

I believe the upcoming Ty Cobb figure will probably be one of his sliding poses, because those poses are so well known. I'm probably a minority, but I don't think that's a good choice. Here are a few sliding photos:

This last shot in particular is a fantastic image of Cobb, using his slide to attack another player rather than just score a run.

Great action shots, so why not use them for the figure? I've doctored the last shot from above to show you why:

Once you remove the other player from the scene, it loses all context. The whole significance of the sliding poses is that he was a "dirty" player who liked to take out other players as he stole bases. Without the other player in the photo the scene no longer conveys this. Also, it's viewed from the back . . . not exactly an endearing way to view a figure.

Worse, it would require posts and I haven't found any figure with posts that I like yet. Here is what it would look like with posts:

Yuck. Imagine any of the above photos without the other player and you'll see why I don't think they work for Cobb's Cooperstown Sports Picks pose.

So what would I suggest for a pose? Cobb's unique "hands apart" batting stance was also a trademark of his, and it's instantly recognizeable. I think these would make much better poses for the Cooperstown 5 Sports Pick:

Like I say, I imagine I'm in the minority on this one and TMP will use the slide pose. The ony reason why they wouldn't is if Cobb's estate or Major Lague Baseball doesn't allow it, which is certainly possible.
